Dr. Edward "Ted" Huey presented at the 2024 NIH Alzheimer's Research Summit on September 23, 2024, emphasizing that Alzheimer's and related dementias are more complex than just memory loss. Dr. Huey is also associate director of the Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research at Brown University, a MAP research partner.
Dr. Huey highlighted these conditions could cause motor symptoms, neuropsychiatric and sleep issues, and changes in appetite. Dr. Huey’s research shows neuropsychiatric symptoms are common across various types of dementia. Given this, Dr. Huey stressed the importance of recognizing this multifaceted nature of dementia for accurate diagnosis and treatment and suggested the need for a broader approach to studying and treating these disorders, including making data more accessible across the field. He also noted federal agencies are expanding their view of dementia research beyond amyloid protein studies, including investigations into environmental factors.
